 Summer Clerk Programme

Every summer we open our doors to one or two law students and give them the opportunity to be employed with us in a hands-on capacity and gain some experience in the ‘real world’. We tend to give preference to students who are in their final year. The programme benefits everyone involved; the students get a taste of the career ahead of them, and we get to enjoy the fresh thinking of our new graduates…

Daniella Schroder, Summer Clerk 2016

“My summer clerkship at Mackenzie Elvin gave me a practical, diverse and challenging introduction to legal practice. I was immediately integrated into the Mackenzie Elvin team and was handed client files to draft letters, legal memorandums, articles and documents from day one. Rather than being limited to one or two areas of law, I was able to move between commercial, family, property, governance and trust matters throughout my clerkship. Having access to such a range of legal work sets Mackenzie Elvin’s summer clerkship apart from what other law firms offer law students.  The staff at Mackenzie Elvin were friendly, helpful and welcoming and were always willing to give constructive feedback and answer my (many) questions! I thoroughly enjoyed summer clerking at Mackenzie Elvin. I gained valuable skills, knowledge and experiences which have set me up with an excellent foundation to launch my legal career from.”

Benton Thompson, Summer Clerk 2015

“In 2015 I was lucky enough to spend a couple of the summer months working at Mackenzie Elvin alongside some exceptional legal staff. Right from the outset I was given the opportunity to get stuck into a variety of work across the family, property and commercial teams. Within my first month I presented an appeal to immigration NZ, attended the family court and learnt about the process behind the implementation and negotiation of commercial leases.

The firm really is a tight-knit little family. Whenever I needed guidance or supervision there was always someone in the office willing to help. You join the ‘team’ at Mackenzie Elvin, and you’ll be treated as a unique individual.”

Matt Smalberger, Summer Clerk 2014

“I was fortunate enough to spend the summer interning at Mackenzie Elvin. My experience there was highly rewarding, due mainly to the following two reasons.

Firstly, the work I was able to spend time on was both highly varied and meaningful. I especially valued the times spent visiting court to sit in on various different conferences. Secondly, the work culture at the firm was great. All the staff were very friendly and this made it easy to ask questions – which I had to do often! This resulted in a truly enjoyable internship which taught me a huge amount as to how the law works in a practical sense.

In short, I would positively recommend that anyone considering interning over summer should consider applying to Mackenzie Elvin.”

Blair Shepherd, Summer Clerk 2014

“Mackenzie Elvin is a fantastic law firm with friendly staff that helped to make my transition from the lecture theatre to the real world as smooth as possible. As a Summer Clerk I completed tasks for all sectors of the firm.  These tasks required a good mix of individual effort and teamwork.

In doing so I received invaluable guidance from an expert team of lawyers that have years of experience behind them. Moreover, because of the smaller size of the firm, I was able to gain a useful insight into how Mackenzie Elvin operates. The clerkship also included several outings, including attending court hearings and representing Mackenzie Elvin at an annual golf competition, which helped to make my time at Mackenzie Elvin a truly outstanding experience!”

Libby Oliver - Summer Clerk 2013

My summer clerkship at Mackenzie Elvin has been the most beneficial legal experience I have had to date. I feel very privileged to have been given the opportunity to be a part of their wonderful team in Tauranga.

When I reflect on the tasks I was given from my first day to my last day, it is very satisfying to think of how much I learnt during my time at Mackenzie Elvin. I carried out legal work including research, drafting letters to clients and other law firms, and drafting documents for both residential and commercial conveyancing. I was also lucky enough to attend Family Court hearings and client meetings. Over one summer, I was exposed to Commercial, Property and Family law. There aren’t many law clerkships that offer that kind of experience.

The staff are very approachable and enthusiastic about giving summer clerks the opportunity to learn about all areas of the legal world. I have been lucky to gain an insight into the real day to day activities of a successful law firm, and now I enter my classes at university with a completely different perspective than before.  I have a new found enthusiasm for law, and am more aware of which part of the legal world I want to enter.

Danielle McSweeney, Summer Clerk 2012

As a law student at university it is very difficult to actually ascertain what being a real lawyer is all about therefore I sought out an opportunity to get some experience in a law firm to get a better idea of what a lawyer actually does on a day to day basis. My summer at MacKenzie Elvin was the best possible entry into the legal world. As soon as you walk into the gorgeous refurbished villa that the offices are situated in, it is easy to see the respectful and friendly culture of the firm. I immediately felt comfortable with all members of staff.

Despite the friendly culture there was no lack of opportunity to challenge myself as I found out on my first day on the job. I was fortunate enough to be able to do a range of work across the Family, Commercial and Property teams. During my summer I was able to go to the Family Court and watch a child being legally recognised as part of a new family after a traumatic upbringing, I also managed the sale and purchase of some residential properties in the Tauranga area, contacted clients and was even able to run my own client meetings with my supervising partner.

Andrew Sclater, Summer Clerk 2011

Summer clerking at Mackenzie Elvin was an invaluable experience. The exposure to a wide range of legal issues gave me a good insight into how a law firm actually operates. This was not an internship based around legal research.

Instead it was an opportunity to complete real legal work that included; writing client letters, observing client interviews, drafting wills, resident and business conveyancing, property insurance and attending a family court hearing. However, what makes Mackenzie-Elvin such a great place to work are the people.

The friendly relaxed working environment makes for an enjoyable experience. I am confident the skills I have learnt at Mackenzie-Elvin will stand me in good stead for a career in the legal profession.
